  • Use colours from the sea such as greens and blues for the tableware and party table
  • Hang up pirate buntings and boat pictures too.

Mermaid / Pirate Party Games:

Having a themed entertainer (Mermaid or Pirate) takes the stress of having to do everything yourself. You can use the time to prepare the food, take photos or spend some time with the other parents. Here are a few simple games that you can also do with the kids.

Go Fish:

Fill up a plastic pool with fish and let the kids go fishing. Use a small fishing pole with a clothespin on the end, and blindfold the child. Then clamp the clothespin on one of the fish. Have a number written on each fish, and that number corresponds to a certain prize.

Treasure Hunt:

Hide the treasure around the house and / or garden before the guests arrive. Explain to the mermaids and pirates what they are hunting for and set them off on their treasure hunt!

Wrap each child’s treasure in a different coloured / patterned paper, saving a sample piece for the child. Hide the treasure around the room / garden before the party. Give each child their own unique sample of wrapping paper to match to their piece of hidden treasure.

Treasure Diving:

Fill up a small plastic pool with water. Place little party favors, such as little gems, gold coins, necklaces, toy fish, and seashells at the bottom. Blindfold every player, and let them dive for treasure.

Hide treasures in the sandpit and let the children dig out the toys.

 Water balloon toss:

Give each team a point each time one of their players busts a balloon.

Musical Islands:

The island can be hula hoops placed on the floor or paper cut in random island outlines spread out around the room or garden. Have one less than the number of children playing. As the music plays, each child dances around the islands. When the music stops each child must stand on / in and island. The child without an island stands out of the game. Remove an island each round until you have a winner.

 Other traditional party games:

  • Pass the Treasure
  • Pin the Tail on the Mermaid
  • Pin the Patch on the Pirate
  • Pin the Flag on the Ship
  • Mermaid or Pirate Piñata

Mermaid / Pirate Party Food:

Fish Bowl Punch:

Place some freezable plastic cubes into your punch bowl to create a festive look to match your theme.

Seashell and Pirate Ship Mini Sandwiches:

Cut the bread into the shape of a boat and make little pirate boat sandwiches for the children. Use a seashell shaped cookie cutter to make seashell sandwiches.

 Log in the boat:

Place cocktail sausages inside mini rolls

 Fish and Pirate Loot Cookies:

Use some fish shaped cookie cutters to cut fish shaped cookies out of sugar cookie dough, and colour them with icing and different colored sprinkles. Leave some of the sugar cookies in a circle shape, and colour them yellow to make pirate gold cookies.

 Fish Snacks:

Get a large bowl, and place different fish /shell shaped lollies an undersea treat.

Jelly and Ice-cream:

‘Gone Fishing’ Ice-cream topped with Blueberry jelly

Mermaid / Pirate Party Favors:

Give out gifts that the child will enjoy long after the party.  Set a budget to avoid buying more gifts than you planned.

  • Get the children to decorate little cardboard treasure chests
  • Loot bag with chocolate coins, lollies or small gift
  • Paint and decorate seashells for each child
  • Fish themed toys available online

Remember to take lots of photos and don’t forget to dress-up as well.
